Committed relationships often lead to sexual intimacy; not the one night stand kind but the kind in which we hope to wake up next to the same person every day for the rest of our lives. The question here is what is that one critical component that drives this desire for a lifetime of sexual intimacy with another person? A little soul searching will lead you to the concept of trust and the security that comes with it. Trust is the driving force in a sexually intimate committed relationship. Once you understand the value of trust in a relationship, you will do all it takes to prevent the breakdown of trust and further its growth.

The True Definition of Sexual Intimacy

Understanding the true definition of sexual intimacy is intrinsic to understanding the essential nature of trust in a relationship. Sexual intimacy is widely different from the act of sex. Sex by itself is a manifestation of our physical needs that can be enacted with anyone that we are sexually attracted to. There is generally no emotion involved except for guilt which comes after the act in certain cases but this is mostly due to social and moral conditioning. That is a topic for another day. However, sexual intimacy is the act of sex that is fueled by love and trust. Trust makes loving someone so much easier. It’s easy to see that trust promotes love and in turn, love promotes sexual intimacy hence it is difficult to sustain sexual intimacy without trust.

Trust is earned

Trust is earned and once a couple truly gets to know each other and establish trust, true sexual intimacy is established. This is perhaps one reason why many older people often dismiss young love as raging hormones. This is not entirely true as young love in the absence of bitter experiences that involve the erosion of trust is often filled with innocent and blind trust. Unfortunately, not all of us spend the rest of our lives with our first love and have to experience a lot of heartache before finding our soul mate. These heartaches and heartbreaks can prove to be a hindrance to trust and true sexual intimacy. Betrayal by one individual can often be the cause for a deep distrust for everybody else and the inability to achieve sexual and mental intimacy with another. This is a mental block that we need to get over.

Never Say Never!

Unpleasant experiences in love can often compel us to think that trust is a negative trait and it is foolish to trust another individual, keeping in mind our experiences in the past. This is a truly smart move if you are willing to completely let go of any chances of finding true love and sexual intimacy in your life. If not; it’s best to let go of the negativity and be willing to let someone help you rebuild your trust. This is a long journey that only a committed partner will take with you, however, it will all be worth it when you achieve true sexual intimacy, together as a couple.
